Meigs Wildcats take it away for win over Destin

Turnovers were the downfall of the Destin Marlins Thursday night as they lost 40-0 to the visiting Meigs Wildcats in middle school football action.

The Marlins were intercepted three times and fumbled the ball away twice.

Destin got the ball first and failed to make a first down.

Meigs, however, put together a seven-play drive for the score. Diante Smith connected with Lincoln Studley on a 34-yard pass play for the score. Studley ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

On Destin's next possession, the Marlins were on the move and had picked up a first down on a catch by Cameron Gagliano. But three plays later, Destin was picked off by Smith.

The Marlin defense managed to stop the Wildcats and even forced a fumble with Matt Pierce making the recovery for Destin on the 2-yard line.

On the first play from scrimmage, the Marlins fumbled in the end zone giving the Wildcats a 2-point safety.

On the kickoff, the Wildcats moved the ball out to the 44 and scored two plays later on a 29-yard run by Studley. He was also good for the 2-point conversion and an 18-0 advantage.

Early in the second quarter, Destin had their best drive of the game only to fumble it away in the red zone. Jack White had five carries on the drive for 27 yards. Quarterback Harrison Brice hit White for a 15-yard completion and a first down. With the ball on the 20-yard line, the Marlins fumbled it away.

Two plays later, Meigs scored on a 79-yard pass play from Smith to Studley. The two connected again on the 2-point conversion.

The Wildcats scored one last time before the half. Studley intercepted a Destin pass and ran it back 65-yards for the score. Smith ran in the 2-point conversion and Meigs led 34-0 at the half.

The final score of the game came in the third quarter on a 7-yard run by Smith.

Destin had the ball two more times but failed to get anything going.

For the game, Meigs had 301 yards total offense with Studley rushing for 96 yards and Smith 66. Smith completed four of six passes for 147 yards and two TDs.

Destin had 126 yards total offense. White rushed for 52 yards and Brice Harrison completed eight of 15 passes for 65 yards and three interceptions.

Up next for Destin, 0-3, is a 6:30 p.m. game Thursday at home against Pryor.
