Lady Marlins rally for win over Bruner

Destin Coach Brittany Cahoon give Kayla Melton a high-five after Melton belted a triple in the bottom of the sixth inning.

It took a little while, but the Destin Lady Marlins finally got their bats going and pulled off a 12-2 win over the visiting Bruner Spartans in girls softball action Monday afternoon.

At the end of four innings, the game was tied at 2-2 with Destin only connecting for two hits at that point, one from Maddie Phillips and Bailey Phillips.

In the top of the fifth, the Marlins shut Bruner down with Samantha Sherer pulling off an unassisted double play.

In the bottom half, Destin put together two hits to break the tie 4-2. Victoria Kuehn walked and  Kayla Melton slapped a double. Up next, Maddie Phillips singled in Kuehn and Melton slipped in home on a throwing error.

In the top of the sixth, Destin didn’t give an inch holding the Spartans in check for another scoreless inning.

The Marlins, however, rallied in the bottom half scoring eight runs. Sherer led with a double to left field and Madison Larumbe singled for an RBI. Savannah Rockwell walked and Bailey Phillips reached on an error and a runner slipped in home. Caitlyn Ream walked to load the bases again, before Melton tagged one for a triple and three RBIs. The next batter popped up for an out. Miranda Treadway doubled for a RBI and Cara Phillips, the Marlins only eighth grader, blasted a double to centerfield fence for an RBI. Phillips later scored on an error for a 10-run ruling on the game.

Destin was scheduled to play Lewis Middle and Shoal River on the road Tuesday evening. Results were not available at press time.
