Lady Marlins come up short in playoffs

Destin’s Maddie Phillips makes the catch at first for a put out on the Meigs Wildcats.

After posting two wins Tuesday evening, the Destin Lady Marlins came up short Wednesday in Shalimar in the first round of the Okaloosa County Middle School softball playoffs with a 10-7 loss to the Meigs Wildcats.

The Marlins gave up eight runs in the first three innings, before they got on the board. Meigs scored two in the first on three hits, two in the second on two hits and four in the third on walks and errors.

In the top of the fourth, Destin batted through the lineup and scored four runs on four hits to cut the lead in half. Maddie Phillips got things rolling with a single up the middle. Miranda Treadway reached on an error and Cara Phillips singled to score Phillips. Samantha Sherer belted a single to right for two RBIs. The next two Marlins struck out, then Bailey Phillips singled up the middle to score Sherer.


In the bottom, Meigs scored two runs on a hit and an error.

The Marlins got one run back in the top of the fifth. Maddie Phillips walked and later scored on a ground out to first.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Destin defense locked in and didn’t give an inch. Destin’s catcher Treadway picked off a runner at first, then Sherer fielded a grounder for an out, then right fielder Madison Larumbe made a throw to second for a put out when a Wildcat tried to take an extra base.

In the top of the sixth, Destin picked up one more run. Caitlyn Ream walked and scored on an error for a 10-6 game.

The Marlins shut the Wildcats down again in the bottom half with Treadway and Bailey Phillips combining for a pickoff at second. Treadway caught a foul ball behind the plate and Kayla Melton fielded a grounder at third for the final out.

In the top of the seventh, Destin scored one last run. Cara Phillips singled and moved around the bases on throwing errors.

Earlier Tuesday, Destin played two road games.

They beat the Lewis Falcons 18-3.

Destin’s Sherer collected three hits and an RBI against the Falcons. Melton and Treadway each had two hits and an RBI. Bailey Phillips, Sydney Wilbur and Savannah Rockwell each singled.

In the second game Tuesday, Destin traveled up to Crestview where they beat the Shoal River Mustangs 19-18.

Down 9-5 after four innings, the Marlins rallied in the fifth with 13 runs and then picked up one more in the sixth.

Big hitter for Destin was Melton with two doubles and a single for three RBIs. Maddie Phillips hit two singles for an RBI, while Treadway and Rockwell each singled.

The Marlins finished the season with a 6-3 record.
