The Destin Dolphins Peewee football team started their season on the right foot with a 25-0 victory over the Crestview Bulldogs Saturday at Destin.

The Dolphins offense really started to click in the second half with solid blocking and an explosive run game producing three touchdowns.

“The boys really started making their blocks and opened up the holes” said Destin Peewee Coach Nate Beard after Saturday’s win.

Maddox Hayles led the offense with 112 yards rushing on 16 carries with one rushing touchdown. Mason Wetzel had 103 yards rushing on 11 carries with one touchdown. Braxton Beard had 67 yards rushing on four carries and one touchdown, while Baylen Knox had rushed three times for 42 yards with help from clutch blocking by Will Blanchard. By the end of the game, the Dolphins offense had an impressive 324 yards total on the ground.

The Dolphin’s defense made a statement in the season opener as well, putting four points on the scoreboard via two safety’s while maintaining a shutout against the Bulldogs.

“The defense played ‘Light’s Out’ football” Beard said.

The Dolphin’s defensive line, anchored by Owen Davis and Cadin Wells convincingly won the battle up front while linebackers Kadon Chapman, Landon Ullrich, Braxton Beard, and Calvin Blackman went to work.

Free safety Mason Wetzel led the defense with six tackles and an interception. Defensive end Maddox Hayles had five tackles, three in the backfield, and helped cornerback Baylen Knox bring down the Bulldogs running back for one of the two safety’s. Calvin Blackman and Carter Phillips also had an impressive four tackles each with Phillips nearly pulling down an interception. Defensive end Will Blanchard proved a dominant force and Kadon Chapman’s quarterback sack caused a key turnover in the game.

Team captains for the game were Braxton Beard, Maddox Hayles, Mason Wetzel, and Owen Davis. Teamwork and execution were the hallmarks of Saturday’s victory for the Dolphins.

Up next for the Dolphins is a 10 a.m. game, Sept. 12 at home against Shalimar. The Dolphins have a bye week this Saturday.
