Destin Middle School cross country teams swept the county championships this week in Niceville.

Both the Destin boys and girls teams made a clean sweep at the Okaloosa County Championship Middle School Cross Country Meet at Northwest Florida State College on Tuesday.

The Destin girls had five to finish in the top 10 while the boys had four in the top 10.

“This season was an awesome experience from a coaches perspective,” said Destin Coach Demetris Stevens.

“We had a good mix of new and returning talent to create depth we’ve never had as a program. The kids put in long hours and logged many miles in pursuit of a county championship and reached their goal. I could not be more proud of these young men and ladies."

The top five girls for Destin were Kambry Smith who finished third overall; Jayden Horne, fourth overall; Halle Bright, fifth; Clara Beth LaFollette, seventh; and Delaney Cookman, 10th.

As for the Destin boys, those finishing in the top 10 were Luke Bilger, second overall; Austin Paugh, fifth; Carson Hickok, sixth; and Theo Cross, eighth.

“The girls finished the county schedule undefeated and the boys only lost one meet on the season,” Stevens said.

In the junior varsity competition, the Destin girls took first and the boys claimed second.

Destin girls finishing in the top 10 were Lauren Adams, third overall; Katie Gilbert, fourth; Maile Sweeney, fifth; Adriana Figueroa, seventh; and Sara Crews, 10th.

In the boys competition, Destin’s Mason Brundidge, took second overall; Logan Pakiz, fourth; Wesley Heyse, ninth; and Luke Pierce, 10th.

Destin will finish off their post season schedule with the Destin Invitational this Saturday and Morgan Sports Center and then a trek down to Lakeland for the state competition on Oct. 31.
