Madison LaRumbe belted a two-run homer to lift the Destin Marlins to a 10-0 win over the visiting Meigs Wildcats in middle school softball action Monday afternoon.

“Madi’s home run was amazing,” said Destin Coach Brittany Cahoon. “I’ve never seen her swing the bat like that before … and it was a pretty pretty swing.”

LaRumbe, who was still all smiles in the dugout just minutes later, said it was her first-ever home run.

But when asked if she thought it was going over, she said, “I felt it as soon as I hit it.”

With a runner on base, LaRumbe blasted it over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the fourth inning.

However, it was not all glowing for the Marlins on Monday.

“We started out kind of slow and then in the third inning they finally got it,” Cahoon said. “And they did good.”

Livia Hughes got the bats going for the Marlins in the bottom of the third with a double. Savannah Rockwell and Braden Runnels each hit singles for RBIs. Destin led 3-0.

In the fourth, Destin blew the game open with six runs on three hits. Caitlyn Ream and Runnels each singled and LaRumbe smacked her two-run homer.

The Marlins finished up with one run in the bottom of the fifth for a 10-run ruling on the game. Miranda Treadway scored on a hit from Ream.

“Our base running was amazing today,” Cahoon said. “They listened, their ears were open all the time … smart base running.”

“And defense was good,” Cahoon added.

Rockwell pitched for Destin, striking out eight, walking four, hitting one batter and giving up only three hits.

With the win, the Marlins move to 2-0. Up next is a 4 p.m. game Wednesday in Niceville against the Ruckel Rams.
