With a 10-3 win over the Davidson Panthers, the Destin Marlins advance to the Okaloosa County Softball Championships on Monday.

Destin will take on Ruckel Middle School at 4 p.m. in Niceville.

As for Wednesday’s playoff victory, the Marlins had a slow start.

“It took us a while to get started,” said Destin Coach Brittany Cahoon.

“But I’m very proud of them, they stayed up. And they came back from being down.”

With no score after two innings, Destin finally broke the ice in the third inning. Braden Runnels was hit by a pitch, and then Maddie Phillips and Miranda Treadway hit back-to-back singles to score Runnels.

In the top of the fourth, Davidson tied the game. Skylan Dukes doubled one off the left field fence and scored on a single from Seirra Goergen. Destin got out of the inning with Treadway making a tag at the plate for the third out.

Destin threatened in the bottom half with two runners on base, but came up empty.

In the top of the fifth, the Panthers took their only lead of the game on a walk with the bases loaded.

However, Destin rallied in the bottom half scoring four runs on three walks and a couple of errors. Destin led 5-2.

In the top of the sixth, Davidson scored one last run.

The Marlins finished the game strong in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Madison LaRumbe and Runnels both walked. The next batter popped up for an out, and then Treadway belted a double up the middle for two RBIs. The next two batters walked and Treadway scored on a passed ball. Savannah Rockwell smacked a double to left center to bring in two more runs for a 10-3 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Rockwell struck out the first two Panthers. Goergen walked and moved around on a hit from Alex Wyrosdick. Goergen tried to take too many bases and was caught in a run down by the Marlins at third base for the final out.

“We hit the ball today,” Cahoon said.

Destin totaled nine hits with Treadway leading the pack with a double and two singles for three RBIs. Rockwell doubled and singled for two RBIs, while Bailey Phillips, LaRumbe, Maddie Phillips and Caitlyn Ream each had one hit.

“And Savannah (Rockwell) did a really good job for us on the mound,” Cahoon said.

Rockwell went the distance, striking out eight, giving up three hits and 10 walks.

Cahoon also praised her catcher.

“Miranda did an amazing job behind the plate. She had some good throw downs.

“Overall they did good,” she said.
