The Destin Marlins girls track team took first place in the Okaloosa County Middle School Track Championships at Etheredge Stadium in Fort Walton Beach on Wednesday.

Jayden Horne placed first in both the 400 and 800 open runs. She also anchored the first place 4x400 girls’ relay team made up of Maguire Holahan, Kambry Smith and Halle Bright.

“We ended our county season on a high note,” said Destin Coach Tina Barron. “The girls finished strong, and their commitment was rewarded with a county championship.”

As for the boys, Barron said, “they demonstrated teamwork and flexibility throughout the spring and at county. We had some injuries and unexpected hiccups this season, but their willingness to work together and push through despite unforeseen circumstances strengthened the team as a whole.”

Destin had several athletes place and do well at county.

Jamison Brundidge, Nick Greer, Evan Olsen and Kristian Murray won the 4x400 boys’ relay.

Brooke O’Keefe and Kobe Babin placed second in shot put and discus, respectively, and Taylor Ford qualified for state finals in discus.

Girls’ mile runners Clara Beth Lafollette, Delaney Cookman and Maguire Holahan placed in the top six, as did Carson Hickok for the boys’ mile.

Maguire Holahan, Maile Sweeney and Lauren Turpin will also represent DMS at the state finals May 14 in pole vault and high jump.

“I am proud of our athletes, and look forward to their competing at state next weekend in Bradenton,” Barron said.
