Robbins Builders nail down championship title
After a close couple of innings, Robbins Builders pulled away for a 14-4 win over Westco Securities in the Machine Pitch Baseball championship game at Dalton Threadgill Little League Park in Destin Wednesday evening.
“The boys played with lots of confidence tonight. It was exciting to see all of them hit, top to bottom,” said Robbins Coach Justin Ray. “We were able to keep pressure on the opposing defense throughout the entire game and we played lights-out D when it was our turn in the field.”
Westco got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Calvin Blackman drilled one down the first baseline and Caleb Wright followed with a single to right center. Both boys scored.
In the bottom half, Robbins answered with four runs. Palmer Robbins led with a single to right center and scored on a home run shot by Jordan Figueroa up the middle. Brody Ray singled but was put out at second on a fielder’s choice from Brooks Chouinard. Chaz Bollinger singled. After a ground out to first baseman Wright, Archer Magee singled to drive in two runs.
Westco got one run back in the top of the second. Will Greenwood singled and moved around on a hit from Quentin Saviola. Easton Bracket knocked a single to left with Greenwood scoring.
Robbins picked up three runs in the bottom of the second. Palmer Robbins reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a triple to right by Figueroa. Ray belted a double up the middle to score Figueroa. Chouinard got a hit and Ray scored for a 7-3 lead.
In the top of the third, Westco scored a run on two hits. Holden Hughes singled and scored. Blackman connected for a double to left but was left stranded when the next two batters grounded out.
Robbins added one in the bottom half with Magee getting the lone hit and score for the inning.
In the fourth, Robbins continued to pound the ball, scoring three runs on five hits. Emerson Fitzgerald and Andy Fitzgerald hit back-to-back singles, and then Robbins singled to left for an RBI. Figueroa followed with a base hit up the middle to bring in two runs. Ray connected for the other Robbins’ hit.
Robbins finished up the game in the bottom of the fifth with three runs for a 10-run ruling on the game. Magee and Robert Danner hit back-to-back singles, and then Reed McConnell singled to drive in Magee. Emerson Fitzgerald reached on a fielder’s choice with Danner going down at third for an out. Palmer Robbins smacked a double up the middle to score McConnell and Figueroa drove in the winning run on a single to left with Emerson Fitzgerald scoring.
After the game, both teams were recognized for their efforts this season and received trophies.
“The kids had a good time this year,” said Westco team manager Howard Wortman.
Destin Little League Association will be the host for the District 1 Machine Pitch Tournament scheduled to begin play June 4 at Dalton Threadgill Little League Park.
