Fletcher takes Florida Cup SUP Race
Destin native Garrett Fletcher dominated the field of 120 paddle-board riders to place first in the 2016 Florida Cup in Madeira Beach.
The Cup Race is held annually consisting of a 9-mile course with downwind, upwind legs and surf conditions. Fletcher finished nearly five minutes ahead of the nearest competitor with a race time of 1:35:17. Fletcher led the race from box to wire with a strong lead at the first buoy turn.
The Florida Cup is one of eight races that are scored to determine the best rider in Florida. Fletcher is the defending champion from 2015, being recognized as the top Florida racer for 2015. He has won two of the three 2016 Title Series Races in Florida scored in a best-of- five format.
Fletcher recently finished fifth in the 12-mile around the island Key West challenge, which is a sanctioned Standup World Ranking Race. This fifth-place finish allowed Fletcher to crack the ranks of the top 50 international paddlers with a No. 48 ranking worldwide.
Fletcher is sponsored locally by YOLO boards of Santa Rosa Beach, who handshape his competition boards and provide the equipment for the competition.
