Marlins lead the pack in cross country meet
The Destin Marlins got it done on the course again this week with a win in both girls' and boy’s middle school cross country.
“Both teams had near perfect scores,” said Destin Coach Tina Barron.
The Destin boys finished strong with 19 points, while the girls finished first with a score of 18.
Pryor Middle School of Fort Walton Beach came in second, Shoal River of Crestview came in third and Walton of DeFuniak Springs fourth.
Kambry Smith was first in for Destin, with a finish of 12:33, breaking the school record in the two-mile event.
Abigail Kline, Kida Bailey, Sara Crews and Sophie Kellogg all ran the race at sub 14 minute paces.
Tara Sloan of Pryor also ran sub 14, coming in third overall with a time of 13:25.
The Destin boys crushed their previous meet times, many attaining personal records.
Luke Bilger continues to lead the Destin boys, followed by Austin Paugh and Theo Cross who all crossed the finish line in less than 12 minutes to finish first, second and third overall for the second week in a row.
“Coach (Demetris) Stevens and I continue to be impressed by the commitment and progress of our cross country teams this season,” said Barron.
“Most of our runners set personal records today, and the gains we are seeing at this point in the season are remarkable. The desire of our team to succeed and push each other to improve has created a wonderful momentum and morale among our athletes,” she said.
With the win, the Marlin boys move to 3-0 on the season, while the girls are 2-1.
Up next, the Marlins hit the trail Wednesday at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s in Fort Walton Beach. Participating schools include Meigs, Destin and St. Mary’s.
