Bruner Spartans blasts Destin Marlins
From start to finish, the Bruner Spartans defeated the Destin Marlins 49-6 in middle school football action Thursday night in Destin.
The Spartans scored on seven of their nine possessions, while the Marlins struggled to make a first down.
Nevertheless, Destin Coach Daniel Griffin looked toward the positives.
“I think our kids played loose tonight,” he said.
“I think they played hard to begin with,” Griffin said, noting the players have played a little timid the last couple of weeks. “I think we took a step in the right direction tonight.”
Destin started out well, making a first down on their first play from scrimmage with quarterback Trey Wainwright connecting with Max Moran for an 11-yard pickup. However, the Marlins failed to make another and turned it over on downs at about midfield.
Bruner didn’t waste any time. The Spartans scored on the second play on a 53-yard run. They also got the two-point conversion for an 8-0 start.
On Destin’s next possession, Jackson Smith picked up 8 yards on the first play, before the Marlins were forced to punt.
Bruner put together a nine-play drive with Kaleb Warf capping it off with a 10-yard run for the goal line. Bruner led 14-0.
The Marlins picked up their second first down of the game on a 17-yard pass play from Wainwright to Brady Bachman. But again, that was it for Destin and they were forced to punt as the first quarter ended.
The Spartans struck again with Jamel Effatt scoring on a 6-yard run up the middle. He also ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-0 advantage.
About midway through the second quarter, Bruner scored again with Zack Marquis connecting with Gabe Adamic for a catch-and-run for an 89-yard TD. The extra-point kick was no good.
The Spartans scored one more time before the half with Ramyah Jarboe-Alford running a punt back about 13 yards for the score. Christian Walton kicked in the point after for a 35-0 lead at the half.
At the start of the third, with a running clock, Bruner’s Effatt scored again on a 1-yard run and Nico Youmans kicked in the point after.
Destin finally got on the board late in the third quarter. Wainwright connected with Bachman, who took it 70 yards for the touchdown. The point after attempt failed.
Bruner scored one last time on a 57-yard run up the middle by Dathaniel Ramsey. The kick after was good and Bruner posted a 49-6 win.
Next Thursday, Destin travels to Niceville to take on Ruckel at 6:30 p.m. in the last regular scheduled game of the season.
However in two weeks, the Marlins will get a chance to face Meigs again in the small school division playoffs.
