Destin teams make good showing at state

They didn’t bring home the big hardware, but they did finish in the top five.

The Destin Middle School boys cross country team placed fourth, while the girl’s team came in fifth at the 2016 Florida Youth Running Association Middle School State Championship held at Holloway Park in Lakeland over the weekend.

Although the Destin girls placed first last year, they still had a couple finish in the top 20 overall.

Eighth grader Kambry Smith, who has led the Destin girls all season, placed sixth overall out of more than 330 runners. She crossed the line in the two-mile event at 11:28.

Sophie Kellogg, a fifth grader for the Destin Marlins, came in 17th overall at 11:56.

Destin’s Sara Crews, 82nd overall, finished at 12:57; Emily Kellogg, 111th, 13:17; Kida Bailey, 143rd, 13:33; Abigail Kline, 156th, 13:45; and Amelia Kline, 159th, 13:45.

As for the Destin boys, they finished in fourth place overall with seventh grader Luke Bilger leading the way with a 25th overall finish at 10:50 out of 351 runners.

Destin’s Austin Paugh came in 37th overall with a finish of 10:59. Theo Cross came in 45th with an 11:02 mark, and Carson Hickok placed 56th at 11:07.

Michael O’Leary came in 107th with a finish of 11:34; Jake Purvis at 231st, at 12:29; and Dalton Williams, 272nd, 12:56 for the Destin Marlins.
