Lightning wasn’t the only thing striking Tuesday evening, the Destin Marlins struck five times for a 5-1 win over the visiting Meigs Wildcats in middle school girls' soccer action.

Gloria Gallardo was leading scorer for the Marlins with three goals bring her season total to 15 at the midpoint of the year. Selena Gallardo and Kathryn Ballard both chipped in with their fifth and first goals of the season respectively.

With the win, the Marlins improved to 5-0-1.

“The girls came out a little off with their passes,” said Destin Coach Demetrius Stevens. “I played a few players out of position and gave a few younger players some early playing time. Maybe those changes caused the apparent lack of initial cohesion."

Kathryn Ballard struck first for the Marlins just 10 minutes into the game. Ten minutes later the Marlin’s found the back of the net again with Gloria Gallardo scoring her first of three on the night.

With the rain starting to fall right before the half, the Wildcats scored their only goal of the game.

After the half, Destin got their mojo back and scored three goals quickly before the game was called due to lightning.

“I loved the response the team had to giving up a goal in the first half. It was the second goal they have conceded on the season,” Stevens said.

The Lady Marlins' next match is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, when they host the Bruner Spartans.
