Knights of Columbus crown free throw champions

Six boys and girls from the Destin area, ages 9 to 14, were named local champions of the 2016 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and have earned the right to compete at the district level.

The Emerald Coast Council No. 11893 sponsored the local competition at the Destin Community Center and all youngsters’ ages 9 to 14 were eligible to participate.

In the boys’ competition, Gunnar Smith was the champion in the 9-year-old bracket; Carter McIlwain, 10-year old champion; and Reeve Dwyer, 11-year-old champion.

The 12-year-old bracket, champions were Mason Brundidge for the boys’ and Jamee Clemons for the girls’. Jordan Lee was the winner in the 14-year-old boys’ bracket.

Each contestant was allowed 15 free-throw attempts in their respective contests. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged. Each of these winners has the option to compete in the district competition to be held at 8 a.m. on Jan. 14 at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Niceville, with an eye toward moving on to the regional, state, and international levels.
