Having Fun rallies for Coed Division I title

It took two games to do it, but the Having Fun Yet? softball team pulled off a come-from-behind victory over the Advanced A/C and Heating in the city of Destin’s Coed Division I Softball tournament at Morgan Sports Center for the championship title.

Coming into championship night, Advanced A/C was undefeated while Having Fun had one loss hanging over their head, a 29-13 defeat at the hands of Advanced in round two of the double-elimination tournament. Having Fun fought their way back from the loser’s bracket where they defeated TayGray Photography 25-11 for a chance at the title.

In the first game on championship night, Having Fun beat Advanced 25-18.

Advanced got on the board first with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Having Fun exploded in the top of the second with nine runs then picked up four more in the top of the third for a 13-5 advantage.

Advanced got a couple of runs back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs scored. However, Having Fun went on another rampage in the top of the fifth and brought in six runs for a 19-8 lead. Advanced answered with five in the bottom half.

In the last two innings, Having Fun put up six runs and Advanced five.

Michael Haynes was tops for Having Fun with a home run, double and three singles for three RBIs. Jen Phillips connected for two doubles and two singles for four RBIs, and Austin Jessup hit two doubles and two singles. Neil Washington clobbered a three-run homer.

The big stick for Advanced was Brandon Patzig who smacked three home runs and a single for six RBIs. Nate Decker doubled and singled and Tiny Lee ripped a triple and a single for two RBIs.

In the title game, Having Fun clipped Advanced 24-23.

Advanced took the early lead, 7-4, in the first two innings.

In the third, Advanced picked up four more runs to go up 11-4. Having Fun rallied the bottom half with nine runs to take the lead 13-11.

Advanced got the advantage back in the top of the fourth with six runs and then picked up three more in the top of the fifth for a 20-13 game.

Having Fun closed the gap in the bottom of the fifth with five runs.

In the sixth, Advanced put up three runs and Having Fun two for a 23-20 game.

In the top of the seventh, Advanced threatened but couldn’t get a runner home.

In the bottom half with one out, Having Fun’s Washington and Jamie Phillips hit back-to-back singles before the next batter popped up for the second out. Up next, Riane Hughes singled up the middle to score Washington. Ryan Grandstaff followed with a triple up the middle to bring in two runs. With the winning run on third, Elizabeth Grandstaff ripped one to right field to score Ryan for the win.

For the game, Ryan Grandstaff slapped a homer, triple and a single for five RBIs for Having Fun. Austin Jessup belted two homers and a single for three RBIs, and Jen Phillips tripled and hit three singles for an RBI. Michael Haynes homered, tripled and doubled for five RBIs, and Tom Ditroff homered and hit two singles for two RBIs.

Tiny Lee hit a triple, double and a single for two RBIs for Advanced. Jordan Brewer connected for an inside-the-park home run and two singles for four RBIs, and Dan Candeias hit two doubles and a single for an RBI. Brandon Patzig hit two doubles and a single for an RBI.
