Marlins run-rule Bruner Spartans in baseball
Benton Henderson blasted a walk-off home run over the left field fence to secure an 18-8 win over the visiting Bruner Spartans in middle school baseball action Monday afternoon.
Henderson went four-for-five with two singles and two home runs for a total of five RBIs.
Henderson’s first homer came in the fifth inning. With two runners on base and a full count, Henderson smacked a fast ball over the centerfield fence.
“I thought it was just a pop-up,” Henderson said thinking it was going to be an out. But then it cleared the fence for three RBIs.
His second and last homer was again on a fast ball.
“It was right down the middle. I knew that one was going,” said the eighth grader.
For the game, Destin connected for 12 hits with Preston Murphy and Luke Edelman each with two.
“Here the last three games we’ve put the ball in play,” said Destin Coach Daniel Griffin. “And when you put the ball in play, you stand a chance to be successful.”
Destin jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning on four hits. Henderson singled and Blake Orr walked. Jayden Kinkopf ripped a double to right for two RBIs. Ben Price followed with a single for an RBI. Edelman singled to left to bring in the last two runs.

Bruner scored two more in the top of the fourth with Jason Jones smacking a double to right, and then added two runs in the top of the fifth for a tie game at 7-7.
The deadlock didn’t last as Destin came in and put five runs on the board. Garrity scored on an error and Edelman singled in a run before Henderson clobbered a fast ball out of the park for three RBIs.
Bruner scored one last run in the top of the sixth.
Destin put the game away in the bottom half with six runs. Murphy doubled for two RBIs, and Jackson Smith drilled a double down the third baseline for two RBIs. Henderson ripped a walk-off homer over the left field fence for two RBIs and a 10-run ruling on the game.
Manning the mound for Destin was Jackson Smith, who pitched the first four innings, striking out seven, walking two and giving up five hits. Henderson finished up the last two innings with three strikeouts, one walk and four hits.
Up next for Destin is a 4 p.m. game at home Wednesday against the Pryor Pirates.
