Bailey Phillips connected for five hits to lead the Destin Marlins in an 11-2 victory over the Walton Warriors in middle school softball action in DeFuniak Springs Monday afternoon.

Phillips went five-for-five with two triples and three singles for one RBI.

But Phillips wasn’t the only Marlin to make contact.

“Our bats were good,” said Destin Coach Brittany Cahoon.

Miranda Treadway belted two doubles and a single for four RBIs, while Braden Runnels hit two singles for two RBIs. Other Destin girls with one hit each were Sam Sherer, Mary Owens, Blakely York, Alyanni Enriquez and Ava Smith.

“We played good infield as well,” Cahoon said.

Destin pitcher Mary Owens went the distance striking out five, walking two and giving up three hits.

Destin got on the board early scoring four runs in the top of the second on four hits. With a runner on base and two outs, Sherer doubled for an RBI and Phillips followed with a triple to left to bring in a run. Runnels singled for an RBI and Treadway knocked in the last run on a double to left.

In the bottom half, Destin sat the Warriors down quickly with Owens and Phillips fielding grounders for outs. Sherer got the third out on a catch at second.

In the fourth, Destin added two more runs on a couple of hits and a walk, then three more in the fifth on back-to-back singles by Phillips, Runnels, Treadway and Owens for a 9-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Walton scored two runs on a hit to left field.

Destin got the two runs back in the top of the seventh. Phillips smacked a triple to right center and Runnels walked. Both scored on a sacrifice deep to center field by Treadway.

In the bottom of the seventh, Destin sat the Warriors down quickly on a pair of strike outs by Owens and a catch by shortstop Phillips.

Up next for Destin is a 4:30 p.m. game Wednesday in Niceville against the Ruckel Rams.
