Marlins make good showing in county track meet

The Destin Marlin girls track team placed second overall, while the boys finished fourth in the Okaloosa County Middle School Track Championships held at Joe Etheredge Stadium in Fort Walton Beach on Wednesday.

“Even with limited athletes competing in field events, our team came together to perform under pressure,” said Destin Coach Tina Barron.

“Our throwers had and exemplary day and all of them set personal records in their respective events,” she added.

Eighth grader Brady Bachmann was one of those athletes that set a PR, plus broke a school record.

Bachmann won the discus with a throw of 140-9. He also placed fourth in shot put with a toss of 41-2.

On the girl’s side, Mariah Manthey placed third in the discus with a throw of 90-2, while Taylor Flint came in sixth at 77-3. Both girls qualified for state with their throws.

In the running competitions, Destin did outstanding as well.

“Our boys 4x4 team cleaned up their handoffs, qualified for state and nearly broke the school record,” Barron said. “Bachmann and (Carson) Hickok both had an exceptional meet, and the girls came back to place second overall.”

Destin’s boys 4x4 team qualified for state and placed first in the county meet Wednesday with an impressive time of 3:58. Anchoring the team was Carson Hickok, who also won and qualified in the mile run with a mark of 5:08. The 4x4 team also includes Will Rutland, Bachmann and Austin Paugh.

The Destin girls did well on the track as well.

Placing second, fourth and 10th in the 800 meter run were Kambry Smith with a finish of 2:31; Sophie Kellogg, 2:40; and Paige Kelly, 2:44.

Kelly and Kellogg also both qualified for state in the 1600 meter run, with times of 5:58 and 5:50.

The Marlins made a good showing at regional’s held recently at Emerald Coast Middle School as well.

The following athletes won their events.

Luke Bilger – 3,000 meters

Bachmann – discus

Kambry Smith – 400 (new school record)

Dylan Rogers – long jump

Sophie Kellogg, Kambry Smith, Abigail Kline and Paige Kelly – 4x800 relay.

Other Marlins qualifying for state are Emily Kellogg and Sara Crews in the triple jump, plus the girls 4x100 and 4x400 team and the boys 4x800 team.

The state meet is scheduled for May 13 in Bradenton.
