Destin Marlins fall short in final minutes

In spite of a late charge by the Destin Marlins, the home team still came up short 34-30 to the visiting Ruckel Rams of Niceville in boy’s middle school basketball action Thursday night in Destin.

Down by 15 points midway of the third quarter, the Destin Marlins didn’t stop. Destin’s Luke Edelman scored two baskets late, while Ruckel hit for one for a 31-18 game at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth, the Marlins staged a comeback.

Ruckel hit a free throw, and then Edelman put a rebound back for two points. Ruckel made two last free throws before the Marlins went on a scoring spree. Edelman put another rebound back for two points. In the last two minutes, Mason Brundidge drove the lane and picked up a foul. Brundidge hit the second of two tries. Second later, Brundidge nailed a 3-pointer to close it down to an 8 point game. In the last 50 seconds, Brundidge scored two more times for the Marlins. However, it wasn’t enough and Destin ran out of time.

Earlier in the game, Ruckel stepped out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter with Thomas Azareyeh putting up half the points for the Rams.

Brundidge scored the only basket for Destin early in the period.

At the start of the second quarter, Destin came out firing away on the Rams, putting up nine-consecutive points to close it down to a one-point game. Brundidge scored five points, while Max Moran and Blake Forester each scored two.

However, in the last two minutes of the first half, Ruckel scored six points and Destin two for an 18-13 advantage at the break.

In the third quarter, Ruckel widened the gap early with couple of 6-point runs to go up 29-14.

For the game, the top scorer for Destin was Brundidge with 15 points. Edelman checked in with nine.

Tops for Ruckel was Azareyeh with 16 points.

Up next for Destin is a 5 p.m. game Tuesday at home against the Davidson Panthers of Crestview.
