Samantha Sherer put up 20 points to lead the Destin Marlins in a 44-24 win over the visiting Davidson Panthers from Crestview in middle school basketball action Tuesday evening.

Sherer hit six baskets and was eight of nine from the free-throw line. Four of those baskets came in the first quarter as the Marlins stepped out to a 12-6 lead.

In the second quarter, Destin stretched the lead to 10 points with Izabelle Adams and Lexi Roberts scoring back-to-back buckets. The Panthers answered with three points and then Adams put up another two points. In the last three minutes Davidson scored eight while Sherer scored the only basket. Destin hung on to a 20-17 advantage at the break.

“I was frustrated with the effort the first half and we weren’t able to get into our press which gets our energy up,” said Destin Coach Susie Pierce.

“But in the fourth quarter we started finishing and it allowed us to get steal after steal,” she said.

At the start of the third quarter, Destin came out with Kaylin Winter hitting a free throw and then a basket. Sherer followed up with a layup for a 25-17 game. Arnaigah Baker nailed a 3-pointer for Davidson and then Destin put up four more points with Sherer hitting a couple from the charity stripe and Rylee Brown one off the glass. In the final seconds, Davidson’s Lauren Cox made a steal for a quick layup and a 29-22 game.

After giving up a couple of baskets early in the fourth, the Marlins went on a scoring spree putting up 13 unanswered points with Taylor Klosterman making three baskets. Ashelyn Heydt scored as did Sherer and Carrington Phillips.

For the game, Klosterman scored eight points behind Sherer’s 20, and Adams put up six for the Marlins.

Davidson was led by Alyssa Bostick with nine points and Baker with seven.

Destin was 10 of 15 from the free-throw line, while Davidson made six of 16.

Up next for the Marlins is a 6:30 p.m. game Monday at Bruner Middle School in Fort Walton Beach.
