Softball teams brave weather for big wins

In drizzling rain and 45 degree weather a few of the coed softball teams in the city of Destin’s Recreational Coed Softball League braved the elements and hit the diamond last week.

Here are the results from the games that played in the various divisions.

Division I

Tay Gray Unleashed 30, Free Agents 24

P.J. O’Connell connected for five hits to lead Tay Gray Unleashed in a 30-24 win over Free Agents in the Coed I Division.

O’Connell blasted a home run and four singles for an RBI.

Tay Gray took an early 10-2 in the first two innings.

In the top of the third, Tay Gray batted in the 10-run limit and Free Agents answered in the bottom half with eight runs.

In the fourth, Tay Gray again scored the 10-run limit for a 30-10 advantage.

Free Agents scored 10 in the bottom half to close it down some.

With time running out, Free Agents scored four more runs in the fifth.

Taryn Gray belted five singles for three RBIs for Tay Gray. Jen Phillips hit four singles for three RBIs, and Michael Haynes cracked out a home run, two doubles and a single for five RBIs.

Brandon Patzig led Free Agents with two home runs and two singles for five RBIs. Jordan Brewer hit a triple, double and two singles for two RBIs and Tiny Lee connected for four singles for three RBIs.

Division II

Beach Zone 15, Island Wings 12

The first half of play was close with both teams scoring three runs. In the bottom of the second, Beach Zone pulled away with four runs.

In the third, both team scored five runs. Beach Zone picked up another run in the fourth for a 13-8 lead.

In the fifth, Island Wings scored one and Beach Zone answered with two.

With time running out, Island Wings scored three final runs in the top of the sixth.

Kat McKinsle led Beach Zone with a triple, double and two singles for three RBIs. Chris Poole connected for a triple, double and a single for two RBIs.

Mike Jones hit a triple, double and a single for two RBIs for Island Wings, while Chris Rubic hit two doubles and a single for two RBIs.

Division III

Almighty Installations 26, Stanley Security 25

Almighty stepped out to an 8-5 lead in the first inning.

In the second, both teams scored seven runs.

In the top of the third, Stanley took the lead with four runs. Almighty got the advantage back in the bottom half with two runs.

Almighty widened the gap with six runs.

In the top of the fifth, Stanley battled back to take the lead 25-23 with nine runs.

Almighty answered the call in the bottom half with three runs for the win.

Amy Harner knocked an inside-the-park home run, a double and a single for three RBIs for Almighty. Chris Poole hit a homer and three singles for five RBIs, and David Beard hit four singles. Justin Bleque also slapped two home runs.

Ethan Randolph belted an inside-the-park homer and a double for five RBIs for Stanley. Gregg Griffith doubled and singled for four RBIs, and Jane Purdy singled for two RBIs.
