Bruner Spartans whip Destin Marlins
The Destin Marlins went down hard, 47-15, at the hands of the Bruner Spartans earlier this week in boy’s middle school basketball action in Fort Walton Beach.
What went wrong for the Marlins?
“Christmas break … I think the kids are just ready to go home,” said Destin Coach Brent Acker.
But in addition to that, Acker said his team failed to do some of the small stuff to win the game.
“We were getting beat on the transition, getting beat deep and not moving our feet … just the little stuff,” he said. “They got a lot of transition points off us tonight.”
The Spartans didn’t waste any time jumping on the Marlins and out scoring them 15-1 in the first quarter with Trey Braxton putting up six points. Aiden Garrity scored the lone point for Destin from the free-throw line.
In the second quarter, Destin outscored the Spartans 9-6 but still trailed 21-10 at the half. Jaden Newell scored three points, while Garrity, Mason Brundidge and Tobias Thompson each scored two for Destin.
In the third quarter, Bruner came out and buried the Marlins. Syr Rhodes scored for the Spartans and then Brundidge hit a pair of free throws and followed up with a driving layup for a 23-14 game. At that point, Bruner went on a 10-point scoring spree with Braxton leading the way scoring eight of the points.
In the fourth, it was all down hill for Destin with the Spartans nailing a couple of 3-pointers early. For the period, Bruner outscored Destin 14-1.
Top scorer for the game was Bruner’s Braxton with 19 points. Rhodes put up nine and Elijah Johnson scored eight.
Brundidge led Destin with six points. Garrity and Newell each chipped in three and Johnson, two and Cooper Stanford, one point.
Up next for Destin is a 6:30 p.m. game Jan. 4 at Shoal River in Crestview.
