Lighthouse Academy whips South Walton

After being coaxed into playing their game, the South Walton Seahawks lost 76-55 to the Lighthouse Private Christian Academy Stingrays of Pensacola on Monday night in boy’s basketball action in Santa Rosa Beach.

“We played their game,” said South Walton Coach Craig Smith. “They spread that two-three out and they want you to shoot it. They want you to run it up and down the floor … then they swing it around and get it to their big guy and he facilitates it to their shooters. It was just a lot of ground for our guys to cover,” Smith said.

Plus Smith was bothered by the number of fouls.

“It doesn’t help when you have 12 home fouls and six guest fouls,” he said looking up at the scoreboard. “I have yet to figure out how South Walton fouls 10 to 15 times more than anybody else.”

Early in the first quarter, South Walton hung with the Stingrays when Barrow Holloway, who finished the night with 13 points, hit a couple of back-to-back shots for an 8-8 game. Lighthouse came back with a bucket and then their big guy C. Szssoho, slammed one in the goal for a 12-8 go ahead. South Walton slipped in a basket, and then Lighthouse added a couple of 3-pointers. South Walton’s Cade Rowland knocked down a 3-pointer before Lighthouse wrapped up the quarter with a bucket and a 20-13 lead.

In the second quarter, Lighthouse pulled away by as much as 18 points, but the Seahawks managed to close it back down with 3-pointer from Holloway, followed by a driving layup from Dylan Hebert. Jacob Tisdale finished up the little run with a put back shot. Szssoho scored once more for the Stingrays and Tisdale finished up for the Seahawks for a 39-27 game at the half.

In the third, Lighthouse made another little run early to pull away by 15, but the Seahawks closed it down to a 10-point game by the buzzer. Holloway tossed in two baskets, while Hebert and Barrett Waldrop each scored two points. Tisdale knocked down a couple of free throws and Jailer Ramos nailed a 3-pointer to start the period.

The Seahawks managed to close it down to a seven-point game in the first three minutes with Holloway scoring and Spencer Burden drilling a 3-pointer for a 55-48 game. At that point, the Stingrays put up eight consecutive points. South Walton gained a little ground on a 3-pointer from Hebert. With 2:51 left in the game, Lighthouse put up 10 unanswered points in less than a minute to pull away 73-51. In the final minute, South Walton scored four points and Lighthouse three.

Tisdale finished with 11 points, while Ramos had eight and Hebert seven for the Seahawks.

Up next for South Walton is a 7:30 p.m. game Thursday at West Florida.
