Lady Marlins give Spartans the boot
The Destin Marlins took care of business early and sent the Bruner Spartans home 8-0 in girl’s middle school soccer action Wednesday evening.
“They had a hunger because we’ve had two weeks without a lot of competitive action going on,” said Destin Coach Demetrius Stevens.
A few of the games slated for last week were called due to cold or wet weather and even a game scheduled for Monday was called off.
But on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Marlins were back on the soccer field and giving their opponents the boot.
On Tuesday, they defeated Walton Middle School 7-0, and then knocked Bruner off on Wednesday.
“Tonight they came out and tried to get into that playoff mentality,” Stevens said after Wednesday's win over Bruner. “I really like what I saw tonight with their finishing and trusting their teammates and passing the ball around the field.”
The Marlins got on the board early with Mariah Manthey scoring in the first five minutes of play.
About four minutes later, Makenzie Maltezo followed up on a strike for the score. Manthey launched a corner kick that found its way into the goal for a 3-0 lead soon after.
At the 11:35 mark in the first half, Ashlyn Fernandez scored to boost the Marlins to 4-0.
Four minutes later, Maltezo kicked one high into the net for a 5-0 lead.
Fernandez finished up the first half for the Marlins with a side kick in the last minute of play for a 6-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Destin again came out with Manthey kicking one straight up the middle in the first two minutes for a 7-0 mark.
Kathryn Ballard finished up the game for Destin with a score just three minutes later.
The game was called with 25 minutes left on the clock, due to an 8-0 mercy rule.
With the win the Marlins remain undefeated with one last regular game yet to play.
Destin will travel to Crestview on Monday to take on the Davidson Panthers.
“Hopefully we’ll continue this good play that we’re on,” Stevens said.
