Lady Marlins whip St. Mary’s on the court
Although the Marlins beat St. Mary’s in two sets, 25-15, 25-18, Destin didn’t play to their potential.
“Honestly, I’m not really happy with the way we played tonight. I think they looked really lethargic,” said Destin Volleyball Coach Katie Davies. “We had miscommunications … and just not attacking the ball like the way that we should and the way we know how to do."
Plus the Marlins missed on 11 serves.
“That’s just giving up free points, which I do not like to do,” Davies said.
But even with the mishaps, the Marlins still walked off the court with a win, boosting their record to 10-2 on the season.
In the first set against St. Mary’s, Destin’s Ava Smith served up eight straight points after both teams missed on serves for a 10-2 lead. From that point on, Destin picked up a couple of points here and there with Jessica Pierce knocking in a point and then later serving up two points. Kiersten Martin served up two points before the Marlins let the ball fall on a miscommunication. Destin got the ball back with a slam from Smith. Amrah DeSimone served up an ace, and then missed on the next for a 20-13 lead.
Destin’s Kyla Buehner served up two straight and then fired in a shot to pick up the first set 25-15.
In set two, Destin made a couple of little runs early to go up 8-3. Ellaine Wolford served up four points and Buehner knocked in two with help from Presley Foster on a few tip ins.
St. Mary’s rallied back to tie the game at 10-10. The scoring went back and forth before Destin edged ahead with Buehner at the service line for an 18-14 lead. St. Mary’s scored two, and then missed on a serve. Destin’s Martin served up a point before missing on her next serve. The scoring went back and forth with Destin getting the last two points with Foster firing one in on St. Mary’s and then Pierce serving up the last point.
