Destin dominates Lions in final home game
Destin eighth grader and team captain Natalie Denton went out with a bang Tuesday night, kicking in five of the eight goals in the 8-0 win over the visiting Liza Jackson Lions in middle school girl’s soccer action.
“The eighth graders just wanted their last home game to go out with a victory,” said Destin Coach Demetris Stevens.
And posting a “W” wasn’t a problem.
“They played with a lot of heart,” Stevens said.
Less then two minutes into the game, Destin’s Jareny Enriquez booted one from left to right to find the back of the net.
A minute later, Denton scored her first goal of the game.
About five minutes later, Destin’s Mary Gargas found herself in front of the goal and kicked on in the back of the net for a 3-0.
At that point, the Marlins fell back a bit.
“They’re a little out of shape and it showed a little bit,” Stevens said, noting it was the team’s first game back after the holidays. “They started off strong and then about 10 minutes in, they kind of got winded … hit a little lull.”
Not finished yet, the Marlins scored two more goals to finish out the first half. Denton kicked one in from about 15 yards out with seven minutes to go in the half. About three minutes later, Denton scored her third goal on a high kick from 25 yards out for a 5-0 score at the break.
In the second half, Destin’s Enriquez started the scoring again. Just three minutes in, Enriquez kicked one in from the right side for a 6-0 game.
About two minutes later, Denton kicked in her fourth goal on a straight away shot from 20 yards out.
The last goal of the game came right before the whistle on a shot from Denton.
With the win the Marlins move to 12-1-1 on the season. Up next is a 5 p.m. game Tuesday at Twin Oaks in Niceville against the Lewis Falcons.
