In their first game back since the holidays, the Destin Marlins posted a 3-0 victory over the visiting Liza Jackson Lions in boys middle school soccer Tuesday evening in Destin.

“It surprised me,” said Destin Coach Carlos Gonclaves. “You always (worry about) that first game after two weeks with no training, and the holiday and everything. You don’t expect to come out today and win a game like this.

“So I’m so happy and surprised because we play without our scoring machine,” Gonclaves said.

Starter Guillherme Marques was out, but Anthony Ordonez stepped it up and scored all three goals for the Marlins.

“He did a very good job today,” Gonclaves said.

In the final two minutes of the first half, Ordonez kicked in his first goal for 1-0 score at the half.

His second goal came about seven minutes into the second half with a shot right up the middle.

Six minutes later, Ordonez kicked another one right up the middle for a 3-0 finish.

“All the players we played today … that (was an) amazing performance,” Goncalves said.

Up next for Destin is a 6 p.m. game Tuesday at Twin Oaks in Niceville against the Lewis Falcons.
