It was a battle to the end but the Destin All-Stars came up short, 6-5, to Shalimar in the 10-12 year old Florida District 1 Baseball Tournament at Dalton Threadgill Little League Park in Destin Monday night.

With the loss, Destin will advance to the play the winner of the Tri-County vs. South Walton game at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Destin.

As for Monday’s game, the battle had good pitching on both sides, hits, close calls and even a home run shot by a Destin All-Star.

Down 5-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, Destin’s Kadon Chapman blasted one over the centerfield fence hitting the top of the bathroom building on the other side.

“He hung that curve ball,” Chapman said as got back to the dugout. “I didn’t feel any thing … all I saw was the ball going up and the people cheering.”

The solo home run shot was his second of the season.

Chapman’s homer set things in motion for Destin to even the score. Will Blanchard followed with a walk and then Gunnar Smith singled to right. Will Jourdan followed with a walk to load the bases. Up next, Brandon Schwind put down a bunt with two runs scoring. Griffin Cann reached on an error and Jourdan slipped in home for a tie game.

In the top of the fifth, the Destin defense was looking good with Cann reaching for a catch at second for the first out. Up next Dakota Jones took one deep for Shalimar but Destin’s Caleb Wright made a running catch for the out. Shalimar finally got one past the Destin defense with a double to right field. The runner eventually scored on a passed ball at the plate for a 6-5 lead.

Destin went down at the plate in the bottom of the fifth on three consecutive strikeouts.

In the top of the sixth, Shalimar connected for one hit but the runner was gunned down by Destin catcher Landon Ullrich when he tried to steal second. Destin held Shalimar for no score.

In the bottom of the sixth, Destin battled but couldn’t get it done. With two outs, Robert Pankratz walked and then Wright singled to right. The runners were left stranded when the next batter grounded out.

For the game, Destin had five hits with Wright connecting for two. Shalimar had six hits.

Manning the mound for Destin were Wright, Chapman and Blanchard.
