Destin youth give flag football a go

More than 25 youth braved 90 degree weather for a chance to participate in the city of Destin’s flag football camp held this week on the football field next to the Destin Elementary School.

Coaches Vince Walker and Mark Hinterthan taught the kids basic football skills during the three-day camp held Tuesday through Thursday.

“It’s just football … just football skills,” Walker said. “Just normal everyday skills that will go and transport to other sports, but football-related sports.”

The youth worked through drills and then played a few scrimmages against one another each day.

This year, the city of Destin will be offering a Youth Flag Football League this fall for youth ages 6-13 (as of Aug. 1, 2019).

“We’re just getting the kids excited about that … and they are doing absolutely great,” Walker said.

As for the league registration, a birth certificate is required with registration. The fee is $95 for non-residents and $65 for Destin residents.

Youth can register in person at the Destin Community Center Monday through Friday. Space is limited.
