Coming off an exciting summer season where they placed third in the Alabama Shootout, the Panhandle Pelicans have opened registration for the team’s fall season.
“From players picking up a stick for the first time to those with years of experience, we saw incredible growth in the 25 young men who joined us this summer,” said Coach Joshua Schmidt. “So I’m excited to see what the fall season brings.”
The Pelicans competed in two tournaments this summer, the Tampa Jam and the Alabama Shootout, where they tested their lacrosse knowledge and experienced a different level of play from what they’re used to in their usual Florida Panhandle opponents.
“Since high school and college lacrosse are played around the same time, many colleges recruit at tournaments like the ones we attended this summer and the ones we plan on competing in this fall,” Schmidt said. “These tournaments put players in the direct line of sight for these college recruiters.”
But it’s not all about college recruiting. Schmidt said the club’s goal is to build on each player's confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship, ensuring the game's integrity and growth across the Florida Panhandle.
Schmidt said that Shoreline Title and Wendy Mignot Fine Pearls & Leather Jewelry are to thank for the program’s ability to continue to further its mission.
“Without the support of our incredible sponsors and the dedicated parents, we wouldn’t be able to impact these young men’s lives and continue to do what we do," Schmidt said.
From Sept. 17 to Nov. 7, practices are set to be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the new sports complex located just off U.S. Highway 98 at 240 MC Davis Boulevard in Santa Rosa Beach.
The Pelicans plan to compete in the Fall Classic in Plant City, Florida, on Nov. 2 and 3 as well as the Turkey Shootout in Panama City Beach on Nov. 16 and 17.
Registration for returning players is $150 and includes 14 to 16 practice sessions and admission for the two tournaments, and for new players, registration is $200 and includes 14 to 16 practice sessions, one pair of shorts, one reversible pinnie, one shooter shirt and admission for the two tournaments. Players are responsible for providing their own equipment and travel/lodging.
“We’re not just making successful lacrosse players at the Panhandle Lacrosse Club,” said Schmidt. “We’re building exceptional young men.”
