Destin High Sharks wrap up winning season in flag football
The Destin High School girls flag football Sharks finished their shortened season with a 4-1 record and hoisting the trophy as Top Junior Varsity team in the recent Capital City Classic tournament in Tallahassee, which showcased 50 teams from around the country.
In the tournament, the Sharks were undefeated, beating Suwannee 25-13 and overwhelming Leon High School JV, 41-0.
Leon, coming off a 53-0 win earlier in the day, presented an ominous offensive front, but the Lady Sharks were prepared having won earlier in the day as well. Destin got on the board on their second possession with a 20-yard touchdown run by Avery Emmick. She followed up that TD on defense in the next series by tipping a pass attempt from the Leon quarterback and running it back 40 yards for another TD.

Destin scored again in the first half on a 15-yard sweep run to the end zone by Emmick, for a 20-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Sharks surprised Leon with a razzle-dazzle double hand-off play with Aviana Kubus running it in from 10-yards out. Destin's offensive barrage was capped off in the air with two strikes for TDs from Reagan Palmer to Bella Castaneda in tight quarters, the last catch being a picture-perfect finger-tip grab by Castaneda. On defense, Emmick led the team with 15 tackles to shut Leon down.
Earlier in the day, Destin put four TDs on the board on their way to a win against Suwannee. Reagan Palmer was solid at quarterback throwing three TDs and Bella Castaneda capped off the scoring with a 15-yard TD run. Meredith McDaniel made two hard-fought TD catches and Castaneda hauled in the final TD catch in the corner of the end zone.
On defense, Avery Emmick and Meredith McDaniel both intercepted passes and Emmick led the team in tackles with 11.
Prior to the tournament, Destin achieved its first-ever win against Crestview High School JV, 20-6, then followed that up with a win against Washington High School Varsity.
