Red snapper weekend canceled
The red snapper weekend scheduled Oct. 27-28 at the Destin Fishing Rodeo has been canceled.
The snapper exempted fishing permit, which would have allowed 400 red snapper to be harvested at the event and be biologically sampled by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission researchers, was issued by the National Oceanic Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) as a Gulf wide effort to collect red snapper biological information.
The last weekend of the Rodeo is historically one of the busiest of the month, with some boats waiting 45 minutes to an hour to weigh their catches. The possibility of additional vessels could have caused major delays at the weigh-in barge.
The cancelation will allow the rodeo board to redirect efforts toward the event and its charitable efforts.
“It’s unfortunate that these 400 tags are unable to be used,” stated Executive Director Helen Donaldson. “But the board made the best decision for the event and its participants.”
All proceeds will be returned to those who purchased a lottery ticket for the snapper tags.
