Mixing it up on the docks

Arkansas anglers on the Huntress with Capt. Mike Graef filled the racks with amberjack, triggerfish, mingo and more.

With more on the catch list, a variety of fish are hitting the docks of late.

From amberjack, king mackerel, grouper to mingo, they are all making a showing on the racks.

Capt. Allen Staples and crew aboard the Al-Lin Monday had four amberjack and a pile of triggerfish and many mingo.

The Extasea with Capt. Nick Hunter at the helm backed in with 25 mingo and a few triggerfish.

Anglers on the Finest Kind with Capt. Dennis Kendricks landed four amberjack, a pile of mingo and one triggerfish.

Capt. Matt Woods on the Rookie backed in with 60 mingo, almaco jack, white snapper and two triggerfish one weighing about 11 pounds. Woods said they were fishing about 18 to 20 miles out, and the bait of choice on the triggerfish was Boston mackerel.

The party boat New Florida Girl's American Spirit with Capt. Jim Green at the helm filled the racks with mingo, white snapper, king mackerel and a blackfin tuna. Word is they caught the tuna while fly lining.

Arkansas anglers on the Huntress with Capt. Mike Graef filled the racks with five huge amberjack, four triggerfish, an almaco jack, and some big mingo.

"We pulled in a lot of triggerfish, but they were about a half-inch short," Graef said. Triggerfish have to be 14 inches long and anglers are allowed to keep two each.

As for the 30-plus pound amberjack, Tony Green of Little Rock, Ark., said, "About 30 seconds after the line was in the water … kaboom. It hit right away. We had four pretty quick."

In addition to all the big amberjack, Green also hooked up with a roughly 125-pound nurse shark.  He said it fought pretty hard and that it took about 25 minutes to get it to the boat. Once they got photos, they cut it loose.

"I was ready for nap" after that, Green said.

Anglers on the Backlash with Capt. Jason Mikel had a big variety on the racks. His anglers reeled in seven king mackerel, three amberjack, one blackfin tuna, scamp, Spanish mackerel and 30 mingo.

St. Louis anglers fishing with Capt. Robert Hill on the Twilight landed two big king mackerel, one about 35-pounds, four triggerfish, mingo, grouper and amberine.

Illinois anglers on the Windwalker II with Capt. Bernie LeFebvre pulled in a wahoo, an amberjack and 15 king mackerel. The deckhand said they caught the kings on a fly pole.

People come from all over to fish in Destin. A few men from Kazakhstan went out with Capt. Justin Destin on the Full Draw Monday afternoon and brought in four amberjack, three triggerfish and several mingo.

Capt. Andy Vaughn and crew on the Special K came in with a rack full of triggerfish and mingo.

Texas anglers on the Perfect Shot with Capt. Brady Bowman filled the boards with amberjack, three king mackerel and 10 triggerfish.

The mix on the racks is looking good — so come on down and join the mix.
