The Hooters Fishing Report - Aug. 19-23
The water is mostly clear under overcast skies with a one-foot wave rolling in at the Okaloosa Island Pier Tuesday morning. In the last couple of days anglers have hooked up with Spanish mackerel, bluefish, hardtail, king mackerel, whiting and redfish.
Bay fishing is good right now. Anglers are pulling in speckled trout on live bait. Bluefish are thick in the bay and will hit most anything, said Peter Wright of Ships Chandler. Don’t be surprised if you snag a big bull redfish while fishing for bluefish. Good spots are the Destin or Mid-Bay bridges. Mangrove snapper are hitting good on small live bait using a light leader. To catch a mangrove, “You’ve got to be a little sneaky,” Wright said.
Amberjack, grouper, triggerfish and mingo are being caught on a regular basis. The grouper bite has been good on the inshore and offshore wrecks. Live minnows or butterfly jigs work well on grouper. King mackerel are still making a showing. Try trolling live cigar minnows or a Yo-zuri around the southeast rocks, broken bottom or Timber Holes. Offshore, anglers are catching wahoo and dolphin near the Ozark.
