Hooter Report Dec. 25

Special to The Log

With a stretch of gray days and overcast skies, flounder, pompano, whiting and bonito are biting in dark water with waves 2 to 3 feet, a southeast wind and balmy water temperatures in the 60s. Expect some reds to be joining the mix.

Flounder are the hot ticket fish right now with folks catching them in good numbers around the near shore reefs and around the pass using bull minnows, Gulps and Savage shrimp. Live shrimp work is a hit too. The redfish have been showing up around Crab Island, Mid-Bay Bridge, Destin Bridge and the Coast Guard Station. Live shrimp and bull minnows work well.

While the fishing slows down some for the holidays, some die-hard anglers make it a Christmas tradition fishing Destin. The bounty of the sea makes a good present, and the amberjack and grouper bite is still good on the edges. King mackerel are still present, but as the weather cools off they will be moving further offshore.
