Jim Wheeler landed a 39.5-pound king mackerel to take top honors in the first-ever Fudpucker's Summer Slam held at Fudpucker's on Okaloosa Island recently.

Wheeler was fishing aboard the Reel Max with Capt. Kerry Veach.

The second place mackerel was pulled in by Mickayla Burke on the Jacked Up with Capt. Cody Garland.

"The event was a big success in that we raised $1,200 for the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance," said Chester Kroeger, owner of Fudpucker's wrote in an email. "It was the most they have ever raised at an event and it will go a long way toward helping with their mission of improving the quality of our waterways."

The tournament was held the last weekend of red snapper season in state waters, so snapper were on the catch list.

The first place snapper was brought in by Shelby Kirby on Destin Inshore Charters with Capt. Chris Kirby.

Reeling in the second place snapper was Jeff Holiman aboard Time Out with Capt. Ken Nettles.

"Everyone that fished the tournament or came to the Awards Party at Fudpucker's on the Island on Saturday had a great time," Kroeger said.

The event went so well, Kroeger says he plans to do at least four more tournaments in the next year.
