Father and son team reel in winning reds in roundup
Out of a field of 66 boats entered, a couple of local guys walked away with the big money in the 10th annual Old Nick’s Redfish Roundup held in Freeport Saturday.
Father and son team, Steve and Hunter Tashik of Niceville pulled in a pair of redfish totaling 12.56 pounds for first place and $5,000 prize money in the redfish tournament touted as the largest redfish tournament along the Gulf Coast region.
Although the winning redfish were caught right here in Choctawhatchee Bay, fishing teams came from Tampa, Daytona, Lafitte, La. and Mobile, Ala. to participate in the event.
“They had to battle the elements to get here,” said Trey Nick, owner of Nick’s Seafood Restaurant and tournament director.
“But the fishing was good despite the weather,” Nick said.
Thirty boats brought in fish to be weighed and entered in the catch and release tournament.
And out of 60 fish brought to the scales, 57 were released and three fish didn’t make it. Once the fish were judged and weighed, they were placed into a live-well to rehabilitate, then released back into the bay.
As a catch and release tournament, Nick says they hope to create awareness for the health and sustainability of the Choctawhatchee Bay and the fish that live in the bay by donating the proceeds from this years event to the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance.
“With their efforts it makes it better for our youth for years to come,” Nick said of the CBA for all they do for the health of the bay.
Members of the CBA were on hand Saturday to help weigh and judge fish.
All winners underwent a polygraph and the tournament paid out a total of $12,000 in prize money.
